DURHAM, N.H. – Freshman forward Morgan Winters (Osprey, Fla.) and sophomore defenseman Colton Huard (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) each scored for the Wildcats as the University of New Hampshire men‘s hockey team tied No. 13 Providence, 2-2, on Friday night at the Whittemore Center in Hockey East action. The Friars won the shootout, 1-0, on a goal by Brett Berard to earn the extra Hockey East point.
 
The Wildcats are now 3-3-1 (0-3-1 Hockey East), while the Friars are 3-2-1 (1-0-1 Hockey East).

  • The Wildcats return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, when they travel to Schneider Arena to take on No. 13 Providence at 7 p.m. on NESN+ and ESPN+. Next week UNH will play No. 15 Northeastern in a home-and-home series on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5 at 7 p.m. The matchup on Friday is at Matthews Arena, while the contest on Saturday will be played at the Whittemore Center presented by ALKU. HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Winters scored the first goal of the game at 16:56 when sophomore forward Connor Sweeney (North Andover, Mass.) sent a pass to junior forward Nick Cafarelli (Middleton, Mass.) behind the net, who then tapped the puck to Winters right in front of the goal as he then finished it off.

  • The Wildcats quickly increased the lead to 2-0 just 32 seconds after the opening faceoff of the second period when Huard fired a shot to the back of the net from the point during a power play on a pass from sophomore forward Robert Cronin (Plymouth, Mass.). Sophomore forward Liam Devlin (Needham, Mass.) also posted an assist on the goal.

  • PC scored its first goal at 11:36 in the second period when Craig Needham took the goalie one-on-one.
  • The Friars tied up the game in the third period at 7:40 with a shot from Chase Yoder.
  • Neither team scored in overtime, but Berard tallied the only goal of the shootout as the Friars earned two points on the night.

 


 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Freshman goalie Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) made 24 saves for UNH, while Philip Svedeback tallied 13 saves for the Friars to earn the win.
  • PC outshot UNH 26-15.
  • The Wildcats went 1-4 on the power play, while PC went 0-4.

  • The assist by Sweeney was his first collegiate point.
  • Winters now has two goals this season.
