Mohegan — Connecticut Sun forward Brionna Jones was named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, the first weekly award of her career.
Jones average 20.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.7 steals per-game during a 2-1 week for the Sun, including a career-high 34 points in an 86-80 win over the Indiana Fever on July 1.
The Sun (12-6) return to action on Friday when they host the Atlanta Dream at 7 p.m. at Mohegan Sun Arena. They will then visit the New York Liberty on Sunday before starting a three-week Olympic break.
UConn women
• UConn announced it will travel to Atlanta on Dec. 9 to play Georgia Tech in a non-conference game. The game will serve as a homecoming for senior Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who is a native if Winder, Ga.
Georgia Tech is the third confirmed Atlantic Coast Conference opponent on the Huskies’ 2021-22 schedule. UConn will host Notre Dame and play Louisville on Dec. 19 in the Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase at Mohegan Sun Arena.
Georgia Tech was 17-9 last season and reached the NCAA Sweet 16.
District 10 baseball (8-10)
• Waterford defeated Montville 11-0 on Monday night as Michael Valentino and Christian O’Connor combined to pitch a four-hit shutout. O’Connor also had a double and single for Waterford while Griffin Fiano stole two baseball. Kyle Chiasson went 1-for-2 for Montville.
District 10 softball (8-10)
• East Lyme/Salem outlasted Groton/Mystic 16-10 on Monday night as Peyton Swanson was the winning pitcher and Lorelei Gronholm went 4-for-4 with a double and triple. Grace Rollins had a double for Groton/Mystic while Kaileen Beard added two singles.
