LAKE CHARLES—Rachel Young’s goal in the 85th minute was all McNeese soccer needed to pick up a 1-0 season opening win over Sam Houston here Friday night.
“That was a grind out goal, it wasn’t beautiful but it found the back of the net,” said head coach Drew Fitzgerald.
Young put the ball in the net off a corner kick that came off the feet of both Salma Elhaimer and Kambrie McFarland.
Sam Houston controlled the first half of play by outshooting the Cowgirls 9-3 but the Cowgirls showed grit late in the second half and it paid off.
