Portland is a picnic paradise. The temperate falls make for prime leaf-peeping lunches at Mt. Tabor Park, Skidmore Bluffs, or Pittock Mansion. Year-round, the novelty of a home rental’s kitchen or picnic spread from the comfort of your hotel room makes for an excellent excuse to explore Portland’s local markets. While the Portland Saturday Market is a tried-and-true place for local foods, shopping like a local includes the hip neighborhood markets and general store. Each one gives a glimpse into the Portland lifestyle.
Come Thru Black & Indigenous Market is an incubator market focused on supporting Black and Indigenous farmers and makers. Come Thru Market runs every other Monday through October 18. The market also has a training program to support farmers of color, some of whom are also immigrants and refugees, in farmers market readiness. Vendors include:
Black Futures Farm, which is a community farm located in SE Portland that is dedicated to using agriculture to grow food and community.
Funderburk Family Farms’ owner, Aaron Cleveland, sells beautiful produce alongside his stunning terrariums, Bonsai, and Penjiing. The food and the plants are not only literal fruits of his labor but also truly works of art.
Happiness Family Farm began in 2016 when owners Prosper Hezumuryano and Rosata Niyonzima—originally from Burundi—used skills they learned during their 12 years in a Tanzanian refugee camp to grow vegetables in their new home of Portland. Today, the family farm includes son Japhety and provides harvest year-round.
Another Spring Farm is growing on unceded Indigenous land now known as Gresham. This land was occupied by the peoples of Chasta, Rogue River, Umpqua, Molalla, and Kalapuya. Another Spring Farm’s farmer is Serena (she/they) who works to grown foods relative to their African, Caribbean, and Asian ancestors.
Piccone’s Corner is not a grocery store, but an amazing butchery and restaurant. The butchery has a sister farm, Wallow and Root Pasture Farm, that focuses on heritage pigs. Their takeaway food is fantastic, too, with takeaway-friendly fare like a braised beef skin sandwich (sprinkled with parmesan, herbs , and Calabrian chili aioli).
Providore Fine Foods is a small and upscale market with a focus on PNW and European goods. You’ll find lots of imported pasta, as well as their own Pastaworks brand. It’s also a good spot for picking up oysters or an amazing Arrosto rotisserie chicken from the pick-up window on the side of the building.
Well Spent Market is a micro-market with big local fanfare. The owner Jim Dixon curates a collection of grains, oils, vinegar , and cheese board essentials. Add basics like local eggs and wine to your order as a $100 purchase qualifies for free delivery.
Hannex General Store is an under-the-radar provisions space from the popular hipster dive bar, Mad Hanna. The bar utilized the vacant store next door to create a general store during the pandemic. They have dry goods, beer, wine, coffee, grab-and-go sandwiches, produce, and perfect milkshakes.
