MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The IUPUI softball team travels to Memphis for the Blues City Classic this weekend for their last invitational before conference play. The Jags will face Indiana State, Memphis, Butler and UT-Martin throughout the five-game invitational.
IUPUI is coming off a tough weekend in Birmingham, Alabama, where the Jags went 0-4 with losses against UAB, Austin Peay and North Alabama. Overall IUPUI enters the Blues City Classic 2-12. Freshman Kendal Calvert leads the Jags batting .341 (14-for-41) with two doubles, one triple and two RBI. Maicey Bedrick leads the team in RBI with seven on two homers, one double and one triple. Sophomore Madison Bryant leads the pitching rotation with 33 strikeouts in 32 innings.
In game one, IUPUI will take on in-state foe Indiana State on Friday (March 4) at 10:00 AM ET. The Sycamores are 8-5 with their most recent win over Samford on Sunday, 7-5. Senior Bella Peterson leads Indiana State batting .432 (19-for-44) with five doubles, one triple, one home run and four RBI. Sophomore Danielle Henning leads the team in RBI with six and senior Annie Tokarek adds five RBI with two homers. On the mound, junior Lexi Benko posts a 2.16 ERA with four complete games, 23 strikeouts and only five walks.
Game two of the weekend is on Friday at 3:00 PM ET against Indy neighbor Butler University. IUPUI will also face the Bulldogs on Sunday at 10 AM ET. The Bulldogs enter the weekend 8-6 with their most recent win over Southern Illinois last Saturday, 7-2. Freshman Ellie Boyer leads Butler batting .381 (16-for-42) with three doubles, one triple and seven RBI. Sophomore Monique Hoosen leads the Bulldogs in RBI with eight. Senior Karli Ricketts posts a 1.24 ERA with 39 strikeouts in 39.2 innings pitched.
The Jags take on host Memphis on Saturday (March 5) at 3:00 PM ET. The Tigers are 5-9 with wins over Rutgers, Long Beach, Austin Peay, UT Arlington and Manhattan College. The Tigers are lead at the plate by senior Gracie Morton batting .392 (20-for-51) with two doubles and seven RBI, followed by junior Camryn Wineinger batting .375 (15-for-40) with one home run and eight RBI. Kendall Lee leads the team in RBI with nine. Sophomore Hallie Siems posts a 3.05 ERA with 32 strikeouts in 38.1 innings pitched.
IUPUI will wrap up the five-game weekend on Sunday (March 6) at 12:15 PM ET vs. UT-Martin. The Skyhawks enter the Blues City Classic 9-5 after a doubleheader sweep over Bellarmine on Tuesday. Sophomore Kaci Fuller leads UT-Martin batting .450 (18-for-40) with two doubles, one triple, two homers and eight RBI. Anna Hazlewood leads the team in RBI with 12 while Kaitlyn Kelley follows with 11 RBI. As a team, the Skyhawks have blasted 14 homers. Erin Gallagher posts a 1.52 ERA with 21 strikeouts while Alexis Groet totals 34 strikeouts with a 1.87 ERA.
The Jaguars play two games on Friday, one on Saturday then close out the weekend with two games on Sunday.
