A weather system is bringing more rain and snow to Northern California on Wednesday, as tens of thousands of people remain without power in the Foothills and the Sierra. Interstate 80 reopened Tuesday night and Highway 50 was also back open in California. But authorities appealed for people to stay home and avoid Sierra travel unless it was absolutely necessary, a day after snow toppled trees and knocked out power for tens of thousands of people across the region. The city of South Lake Tahoe said that gas, tow trucks and lodging accommodations are at capacity. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, 52,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers across its Sierra division were still without power. That is down from more than 71,000 Tuesday night. Most of the outages have been in Nevada and El Dorado counties. “Access remains difficult. Snow is preventing us from doing patrols. Many roads remain closed and weather conditions are keeping us from using aircraft,” PG&E spokesperson Karly Hernandez said. “We are assessing in lower elevations, but in many areas we do not yet have access due to extreme weather conditions.”She said that since Christmas morning through Tuesday morning crews had restored power to 179,000 customers system-wide.Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a state of emergency Tuesday night over dangerous road conditions and authorities closed Highway 50 at the state line. Our weather team says to expect steady rain for the Valley and lower Foothills through Wednesday’s morning commute. After sunrise, the snow levels will gradually rise. 6:28 a.m.: Here’s the weather outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Waldman says to expect dry weather through sunset on Tuesday. Scattered showers will return to the Valley after that. Rain will fill in and last through midday Wednesday.

The air will be cool enough for more low elevation snow. Some flakes will mix in as low as 700 feet overnight and into Wednesday morning without accumulating. Areas at 2,000 feet may pick up another 1 to 3 inches but unlike Monday, this snow should be more powdery and shouldn’t be as problematic for trees and powerlines. Accumulations will range from 8 to 12 inches above 6,000 feet.

After Wednesday, a stretch of quiet weather will take us through New Year’s weekend.
