A weather system is bringing more rain and snow to Northern California on Wednesday, as tens of thousands of people remain without power in the Foothills and the Sierra. Interstate 80 reopened Tuesday night and Highway 50 was also back open in California. But authorities appealed for people to stay home and avoid Sierra travel unless it was absolutely necessary, a day after snow toppled trees and knocked out power for tens of thousands of people across the region. The city of South Lake Tahoe said that gas, tow trucks and lodging accommodations are at capacity. As of 6 a.m. Wednesday, 52,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Company customers across its Sierra division were still without power. That is down from more than 71,000 Tuesday night. Most of the outages have been in Nevada and El Dorado counties. “Access remains difficult. Snow is preventing us from doing patrols. Many roads remain closed and weather conditions are keeping us from using aircraft,” PG&E spokesperson Karly Hernandez said. “We are assessing in lower elevations, but in many areas we do not yet have access due to extreme weather conditions.”She said that since Christmas morning through Tuesday morning crews had restored power to 179,000 customers system-wide.Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak issued a state of emergency Tuesday night over dangerous road conditions and authorities closed Highway 50 at the state line.
