Hall of Fame course architect Pete Dye’s Straits contribution to Destination Kohler’s Whistling Straits is a dramatic design that is as gorgeous as it is vexing.
Located just north of Sheboygan, Wis., the Straits unfolds along a 2-mile stretch next to Lake Michigan and features eight waterside holes. The unpredictable winds, undulating terrain and more than 1,000 bunkers offer a relentless challenge over a layout that measures nearly 7,800 yards. Dye, though, shows a bit of compassion with numerous greens that offer open access to run-up shots.
The Straits, built on a former Army base and opened in 1997, has already hosted three PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open, and in 2021 adds a Ryder Cup to its resume.
