Cornwall has been revealed as Brits’ most popular childhood holiday destination, according to a new study.
The holiday hotspot topped a list of 10 destinations including Devon, North Yorkshire, the Isle of Wight and Dorset in new research by Holidaycottages.co.uk which looked into the best nostalgic holidays in the UK.
Cornwall proved to be a hit across various generations, with almost all age groups choosing it as their top nostalgic destination, the only exception being those aged 55-64 who opted for Devon instead.
What exactly makes for a classic trip down memory lane? Well, for the UK holidaymakers who took part in the survey, key memories included long car journeys, being around family, eating fish and chips, making sandcastles and playing in amusement parks or arcades.
Considering there are plenty of brilliant family-friendly beaches in the UK, it’s not surprising that most of the factors on that list were related to seaside adventures.
However, with the likes of North Yorkshire, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands on the list of popular locations, it seems that trips to the countryside still remain firm favourites too.
The research revealed that nearly a third of Brits will continue to return to their childhood holiday spots at least once every few years, due to a mixture of loving the location, feeling an emotional attachment to an area, and enjoying the familiarity.
Unsurprisingly, as a nation we’re keen to pass the experiences down to future generations too. In fact, nearly a quarter of Brits said they had childhood memories with their parents and wanted to make new ones with their own family too.
With the pandemic continuing to cause uncertainty around international travel, it’s no surprise that there’s been a huge rise in Brits opting for a staycation this summer.
